New Chinese cabbage variety for the NZ fresh market: KATANA

Katana is a variety developed for growers looking for reliable summer and autumn production, strong field performance, and marketable head quality.

Built for reliable summer and autumn harvest, Katana has stood out through the challenging late spring and summer 2025/26 season, showing the type of consistency growers need when conditions are less predictable. Its strong crop performance makes it a practical option for maintaining supply through key summer and autumn harvest slots.

Katana helps growers extend and strengthen their production window. With a harvest window from December to June, it offers a useful fit for growers planning all-year-round supply into the New Zealand fresh market. Sitting alongside Katana are Trooper and Warrior from the Lefroy Valley Chinese cabbage programme.

Marketable heads with strong crop appeal

Katana produces barrel-shaped heads with a semi-blistered, dark green outer texture and excellent yellow internal colour. Very little internal ribbing gives the heads a clean, attractive cut appearance, supporting strong presentation at harvest and sale.

For growers, Katana brings together practical agronomic strengths and consumer appeal. Its consistent 2–3 kg head weights, good tolerance to sclerotinia, and sweet taste make it a dependable choice for producing quality Chinese cabbage.
