Lefroy have trialled hundreds of green drumhead cabbage over the last 20 years. During this period there has been a number of very good varieties available to growers including Cabaret, 228, Autumn Pride and Napoleon. All have been benchmarks at some stage.
Through our hard work we have established a new cool season cabbage. Early on in our trialling programme Fuyu Midori stood out and after 3 years extensive trials and market introduction shows the following qualities:
- Medium dark green heavy leaf.
- Texture and head type is very much like the “old” industry benchmark Wintercross which dominated the NZ market until the late 1980’s.
- Uniformed maturity and high quality internal texture and colour.
- Fuyu Midori has retained a small medium core and as of 1 November 2012 we have not seen bolting.
- New seasons seed is now in store with 99% germination and excellent emergence vigour – 98% in 3 days!
- Consistent field holding with minimal splitting
- Sowing times and maturity will vary from region to region but this proven variety is 5-7 days later than the current market standards. We have already had strong support and orders across the country. If you haven’t yet ordered please ask for a production programme and place your order.
