Lefroy Valley now has a solid core of high quality commercial varieties in or about to enter the market in the next 6 -12 months. These varieties cover fresh market, bunching and juice We are assessing a large number of screening trials in co-operation with growers from Invercargill to Pukekohe. During this process we are taking note of the disease resistance of both the roots and foliage.
In addition we research the varieties with the best yield potentials, uniformity, shape, colour and smoothness. NARVIK (CRF 8840) is a main season Nantes variety, which is very comparable to a number of varieties currently being grown. NARVIK has excellent root length, quality cylindrical shape, smoothness with good internal and external colour.
Ohakune is carrot country!
Just enter town and the land mark carrot monument says it all!. Henley Chan has grown carrots and been part of the carrot industry for over 40 years and has seen the good years and the less than productive years. Henley is a much respected carrot grower and growing this crop has been a big part of his commercial growing life. Improved varieties and trialling is still a major interest to Henley and he has followed the development of Lefroy Valley’s carrot varieties. The team at Lefroy Valley have conducted many carrot trials over recent years.
In the last three seasons Lefroy Valley has had some very good material for me to see and judge. The quality of the varieties is improving every year. This year has seen me make some commitments to proceed to small commercial plantings of the best in trial“.
